Prepare For More Confrontations In Laventille Communities, Says Activist

Activist Lennox Smith predicting that there could be more confrontations between police and communities in Laventille and Morvant. Mr. Smith says as long as the socio-economic problems of Laventille are not been dealt with, there will always be conflict. Speaking yesterday, Mr. Smith said the Government has to accept that its many youth focused programs are not working. His statement follows the violent confrontation on Picton between residents and police and soldiers last Tuesday, where residents claimed that police took one of the youth in the area and carried him to a rival gang to be beaten, he was subsequently charged with weapons and other offenses. He said the community council of elders is hoping to find solutions to some of the issues. As a result of confrontation acting commissioner of police to removed three officers from duty in the Picton area.
